FaceBook 3.5 Update Removes Hidden iPad App

by on Sep.18, 2011, under computer, Miscellaneous, Software, tablet devices

The latest update of the FaceBook app 3.5 offers many cool new features such as…

  • Made it easier to share with who you want
  • Added the ability to tag friends and places in posts
  • Added the ability to share external links from a web view
  • Added new design for Profile and Group Walls
  • Improved the sharing tool to add privacy controls on posts and match your settings on the web site

If you are an (Jailbroken) iPad owner that has been using FaceForward available in Cydia to take advantage of the hidden version of the app, you will want to steer clear of this update.

As FaceBook has totally removed the hidden version from the app and FaceForward can not enable something that no longer exists.

The good news is that if you accidentally upgrade to version 3.5 there is hope.

Step 1: Remove / Delete FaceBook 3.5 from your iPad and iTunes.

it is also recomended that if you use FaceBook on an iPhone you remove 3.5 from that device as well to avoid accidental upgrade though iTunes syncing the newer version back to the iPad from iPhone.

Step 2: Download FaceBook version 3.4.4 from apptrackr.org.

Step 3: add downloaded version to iTunes library.

File > Add File To Library (locate V3.4.4 and click open)

Step 4: Sync to iPad as normal.

Step 5: Install or re-install FaceForward from Cydia.

Fixed!

iPad 2, The New Toy

by on Sep.11, 2011, under computer, Miscellaneous, tablet devices, Technology

As some may know I?ve been hanging to get myself an iPad 2, and finally I have managed it. This is my first ever iPad, not having purchased the first version because as a general rule the first incarnation of Apple mobile devices tend to get a major overhaul ( as well as fantastic new features that were overlooked at first) in around or under a year, as well as the price.

It’s been around a month since I picked up my 16GB, Wi-Fi only iPad 2, and having spent a few days in hospital very shortly after the purchase I had plenty of time to get aquatinted with my new toy. Just about every day I am discovering more fantastic features of this device from built-in brilliance, like the rather intuitive text editing with dynamic spell check, to the vast array of apps that just add the versatility of this little beauty.

This blog post was written with one of the above mentioned apps Blogsy, that is seriously feature packed and offers easy access to your Picasa, Flickr and Youtube accounts etc. with the ease of drag and drop placement to your post. Uploading complete posts couldn’t be simpler; all that is required is a quick vertical swipe of the finger.

What’s hot?

The size it?s small, but not too small, it is a bit smaller than a sheet of paper, it?s easier to surf the Web than with a smartphone. Which means it really is ultra-portable. No spine bending laptop to carry. Have iPad, will travel.

Wi-Fi connectivity, seriously it is drop-dead easy to share the internet from my iPhone 4 via ?Personal; Hotspot? and most places I go have wireless networks anyway so if I ask nicely? I seriously considered getting the 3G version during my pre-purchase investigation of the iPad, and decided the big price difference wasn?t worth it, plus I would have to sign up to another 3G internet package that I already have on my iPhone.

The seemingly limitless amount of 3rd party add ons are available to compliment the iPad at very fair prices if you like to shop online and are prepared to wait up to 4 weeks. I started by purchasing a faux leather case front and back screen protectors and a stylus for less than $19 Australian. ? Next I was perusing eBay and found and won another leather case with inbuilt Bluetooth wireless keyboard for only $25. My most recent purchase, a 5 in 1 camera connection kit, was a great buy, and lets me sync photographs directly from my camera or iPhone 4 via the USB cord and it also takes SD cards.

What?s not?

Well not a lot really but if I had to nominate one thing as being a letdown that would be the camera. Although it looks good on paper the camera is awkward as heck to use (given that may well be because I only have one correctly functioning arm) but here is my tip, I don?t think you are going to see too many folks walking around taking happy snaps with the iPad. Also the results don?t seem all that good to me.
Having said that the front facing camera is sure to supply much fun with Photo Booth and the addition of FaceTime is a pretty cool feature.

My new 16g Apple iPhone 3G S

by on Oct.26, 2009, under Internet, Miscellaneous, Music, Software, Technology

miPod

Recently I got myself an 16GB Apple iPhone 3GS it was one of those items that you want more than you need. So as a result I procrastinated over it’s purchase for weeks. Finally I bought the gizmo that everyone’s talking about.

What do you think about it? I hear you say, I love it! Apple really know how to put a quality feature packed product together. No regrets so far the only thing that I am not happy about is the exorbitant price of data access, but can hardly be blamed on Apple.

backAlthough I don’t do a huge amount of text messaging the ease of use of this feature and the attractive bubble like conversation history have me happy to send a few more with the The iPhone keyboard accelerates your typing because it tracks what you type, then suggests words, corrects spelling, and inserts punctuation for you.

With all the excitement comes a little bit of sadness, knowing that my 8OGB iPod Classic has become redundant. With a 3.5″ touch screen using the iPod feature has never been easier. choose from you music by scrolling through artits, album, playlists or cover flow. My favorite feature is the new shaking to shuffle songs.

With the addition of  TomTom for iPhone it has turned the iPhone into a fully featured GPS. Will this thing ever stop amazing me with it’s versatility and ease of use? I think not!  If you are like myself and have been thinking about getting yourself one of these all I can say is GO FOR IT!

Edit: after a bit longer using it I have noticed that battery life is a bit low, but considering the size of screen I am not all that surprised.  And the lack of ability to easily share ring-tones and photos etc with blue-tooth is a disappointment. All is hope is not lost, there are third party apps designed to help you do this. As a side note to this issue I am glad to say the iPhone connects easily with my Nokia blue-tooth in car kit and works a treat.

Ballarat Light Car Club, Khanacross 13 July

by on Jun.22, 2009, under Ballarat Light Car Club, Ballarat Light Car Club, Miscellaneous, Vehicles

Picture-009A bit over a week ago I helped out at a Khanacross held by the Ballarat Light Car Club. I drove the stop watch while another club member Noel wrote the competitor’s times down. It was possibly the coldest June day I have ever experienced with wind that went straight through us. My nose was running my eyes were watering but I still had a good time.

A khanacross is an inexpensive, safe way to develop your driving skills and have fun!

The competition is held on unsealed surfaces and involves a series of timed tests utilizing various layouts. The Confederation of Australian Motor Sport (CAMS) has stipulated that since a khanacross is not a “speed event” no straight section of the course is allowed to exceed 150 metres and this means the speeds are relatively low. Only one car is allowed on each test at any one time.

Many of our club members use purpose built vehicles (which are also suitable for most other forms of competition offered by our club) and these can often be developed to a competitive standard for a total cost of less than $4000.00 (sometimes much less!)

Rally type winter tread tyres are usually permitted in our khanacrosses although our popular once a year Stapo’s khanacross allows only less aggressively treaded road tyres.

Your road registered “everyday” vehicle is also suitable for khanacrosses provided it is well maintained and equipped with an approved fire extinguisher.

All drivers must wear an approved safety helmet and possess an easily obtained CAMS level 2 NS licence.

Moooving Art Shepparton, Victoria

Spider Cow Queens Gardens

Spider Cow Queens Gardens

A few months ago (I know I’ve been slack) I visited a friend in Shepparton where I lived for a few years in the early 90′s and while there I just had to photograph the “cows” !! I can not wait to get get back to check out the new additions and the ones I missed last time around.

Shepparton is the fifth largest city in Victoria, Australia. The population of the municipality of City of Greater Shepparton in 2005 was estimated to be at 60,403 residents. The population of Shepparton-Mooroopna is estimated at 38,773. It is located approximately 200 km North-East of Melbourne.

Moooving Art is a mobile, interactive public art exhibit that features life-sized three-dimensional cow sculptures – with attitude! Local artists transform these sculptures to make each piece unique, or funny, or challenging.

The sculptures are regularly moved to different locations around the city. You can find the cows in parks and public open spaces, on the sidewalks and in surrounding towns. New cows are always being added to the herd as older ones are put out to pasture’.

Greater Shepparton is the heart of a region that produces 35°o of Australia’s dairy exports, so the cow was a natural choice for this unusual exhibit. There are now over 90 cows wandering about the area, adding colour, and fun, to your visit.

Zaidee's Rainbow Foundation Cow
Zaidee’s Rainbow Cow

Zaidee’s Rainbow Foundation is a Shepparton based organisation with the aim of increasing the level of tissue and organ donation in Australia.  It does this by raising awareness of tissue and organ donation in the community.

The foundation is run by Allan and Kim Turner.  Their daughter, Zaidee Rose Alexander Turner – aged 7 years and 22 days died suddenly on 2nd December 2004 from a burst blood vessel in her brain called a Cerebral Aneurism. The Turner family have been registered Organ and Tissue Donors for 5 years. As a result Zaidee donated her Organs and Tissues at the Royal Children’s Hospital as were her wishes at the time. Zaidee was the only child in Victoria under the age of 16 years and we have been told one of the youngest Australians to donate her organs and tissues in 2004. She was only I of 6 children nationally to donate their organs.

In the year Zaidee died, another 130,000 Australians also died. Only 218 people generously donated their organs or tissues. One in five Australians on the transplant waiting list die before they get a chance to receive a transplant. Currently there is between 1700 to 2000 people waiting to get that important call from the hospital that they have found a donor for their transplant.

concrete

After 6 years I finally get somewhere to park my car

After moving in to my current Unit back in 2002 I quickly realised that there was no way to park my car securely behind the supplied gates. So I decided to sacrifice the lovely lemon tree that was situated in the middle of the lawn area. Apart from losing the access to fresh lemons this has worked well until this year.

This winter has been the wettest here in Ballarat that I can remember in years. Along with the rain comes MUD! Apart from what it was doing to my shoes I also fell ass over tit and just about gave myself a sex change in the process.

Being as angry as I was in retrospect maybe I should not have been talking to anyone, but I telephoned the owners and proceeded to explain what had happened and that with my disability it should not have happened in the first place. The girl I spoke with agreed and was quit sympathetic despite my obvious aggressive mood and assured me that they would get someone to inspect the property soon.

Latter that afternoon true to word the inspector was there and told me that they would be able to put down concrete strips for the car to park on which would eliminate the mud problem. Bright and early the following Monday morning the concreters arrived and boxed the job up. The following day the concrete was poured.
